IBS and chest tightness: what to know

Gas, abdominal distension, or reflux can sometimes create pressure felt high in the abdomen or lower chest, but chest tightness can also occur with angina, asthma, COPD, panic disorder, or generalised anxiety disorder. The sensation's location, onset, duration, relation to exertion or meals, and accompanying breathlessness, sweating, nausea, palpitations, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw are clinically useful details. IBS does not rule out another condition.

Stop exertion and note when the tightness began, what you were doing, and whether breathing or position changes it. If a clinician has prescribed an inhaler, use it only according to your action plan. Do not rely on an IBS explanation or repeatedly self-treat chest symptoms with reflux medicines without assessment. A healthcare professional can examine you and choose tests based on your risk and symptoms.

Call emergency services for new, severe, persistent, or exertional chest tightness, especially with breathlessness, faintness, sweating, nausea, blue lips, confusion, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Urgent assessment is also needed when an asthma or COPD flare is making breathing difficult.
