I have so much dandruff: what should I know?

Short answer
A large amount of dandruff calls for a consistent scalp routine and assessment if flakes, itch or inflammation do not settle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding heavy flaking
Dandruff is scalp flaking that may be dry, greasy or itchy. Seborrheic Dermatitis can cause thicker scale, redness and irritation, often around oily areas such as the hairline and ears. Contact irritation from dye or styling products can mimic it. Heavy scale does not automatically mean infection, but pain, crusting, oozing or hair loss changes the need for assessment.
Build a routine
Use a Medicated Shampoo Treatment according to its directions and massage it gently into the scalp. Rinse thoroughly, avoid scraping attached scale and pause any product that causes burning. If a clinician thinks a yeast-related process is contributing, Topical Antifungal Treatment may be considered. Keep using the recommended schedule after improvement if maintenance is advised, because stopping abruptly can allow flaking to return.
Signs that need review
Seek a dermatology or primary-care review when the scalp remains heavily flaky after appropriate use, or when symptoms disrupt sleep or daily activities. Prompt assessment is warranted for tender plaques, pus, bleeding, sudden hair loss, fever or swelling. Itchy Scalp and Flaky Scalp pages can help you describe the pattern, but they do not replace an examination.

Questions people ask
Should I wash my hair less often?
Not necessarily. The right washing frequency depends on oiliness, hair type and the treatment used; a clinician can help tailor it.
Can scratching remove dandruff faster?
Scratching can break the skin and increase irritation, so soften and wash scale rather than picking at it.
