I get white spots when I tan: what should I know?

Flat pale spots may follow previous irritation, inflammation, or a change in pigment production. Fine scale can suggest a superficial infection or dry skin; a smooth, sharply lighter patch that expands needs a different assessment. Spots around follicles may be mistaken for Pimples or Folliculitis, while a rash from a product can resemble Perioral Dermatitis. The appearance after tanning does not by itself identify the cause. Tanning also adds ultraviolet exposure, which can burn and damage skin.

Avoid intentional tanning and protect exposed skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen, clothing, and shade. Do not use bleaching products or harsh scrubs on pale areas. Photograph the spots in consistent lighting and note whether they are scaly, itchy, spreading, or changing. Arrange a dermatology assessment if the marks persist, multiply, have a clear edge, or affect hair or nails; examination may include a close look at the surface and pigment pattern.

Get prompt care for blistering or severe sunburn, rapidly spreading redness, painful open skin, fever, or facial or eye swelling. A non-urgent appointment is sensible for new persistent pale patches, especially when the diagnosis is unclear or the area keeps changing.

Ask whether the spots are pigment change, scale, or inflammation; whether any product or medicine could be involved; how to protect the skin; and which treatment is appropriate after the diagnosis is confirmed.
