Short answer

Limping is a change in walking caused by pain, weakness, restricted movement, or an injury, and new or worsening limping deserves attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What a limp reflects
Pain, weakness, stiffness, or altered balance
Record
Onset, injury, pain location, swelling, and weight-bearing ability
Urgent sign
Inability to bear weight or a deformed limb after injury

The short answer

People limp to reduce pressure on a painful leg, protect an injured joint, or compensate for weakness or limited movement. Causes range from a minor soft-tissue injury to hip or knee arthritis, a stress fracture, or a hip fracture. The speed of onset, ability to bear weight, injury history, swelling, and pain location guide the next step.

What your walking pattern may show

A short step, reduced time on one leg, or a tilted trunk can reveal where movement is uncomfortable. Hip problems may cause groin or thigh pain, while knee problems are often felt around the knee and worsen with loading. A stress fracture may produce focused pain that builds with activity. A limp after a fall, especially with inability to stand, raises concern for a significant injury.

Limping can also continue after the original pain improves because muscles and balance have adapted to the protective pattern. Persistent limping still merits review so the cause and walking mechanics are addressed.

What to do today

Reduce weight-bearing activity, use a handrail, and wear supportive shoes. Do not force a normal stride through sharp pain. If there was a recent injury, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods and avoid massage over a suspected fracture. Note when the limp began, what makes it worse, and whether you can bear weight safely.

Arrange assessment if the limp persists, recurs, or interferes with work or sleep. The clinician may examine the hip, knee, ankle, strength, and walking pattern, then decide whether imaging or rehabilitation is needed.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent care after a fall or twist if you cannot bear weight, the limb looks deformed, pain is severe, or swelling appears quickly. Get prompt help for fever with a hot swollen joint, new numbness or weakness, a pale or cold foot, or sudden unexplained calf swelling. These signs need timely assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what structure seems to be causing the limp, whether an X-ray or other scan is needed, and which activities are safe. Ask whether you need temporary walking support, exercises, or treatment for hip, knee, or bone pain.

Questions people ask

When is limping an emergency?

After injury, inability to bear weight, deformity, severe pain, or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent assessment.

Can arthritis cause a limp?

Hip or knee arthritis can alter walking through pain and stiffness, but persistent limping should still be assessed.
