Hysterectomy during menstruation

Having menstrual bleeding does not create a new period after the uterus is removed. The team may ask about the expected date, amount of bleeding and possibility of pregnancy when arranging surgery. Heavy bleeding can contribute to anaemia, while the underlying reason for surgery may include Uterine Fibroids, Endometrial Hyperplasia or heavy periods. Your hospital may give practical advice about pads, hygiene, medicines and whether to tell them if bleeding starts before admission. The operation itself may be abdominal, vaginal or keyhole, depending on anatomy and the reason for treatment.

Tell the pre-operative team if your period begins, becomes unusually heavy or is accompanied by new pain. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the team tells you to; some medicines affect bleeding or anaesthesia. Follow fasting, showering and arrival instructions, and bring a list of medicines and allergies. Arrange help at home because lifting and strenuous activity are restricted while tissues heal. Ask how to manage sanitary products on the day of surgery.

Before surgery, seek prompt advice for soaking pads quickly, dizziness, faintness, severe pelvic pain or a positive pregnancy test. After surgery, call the hospital for increasing bleeding, clots, fever, worsening pain, smelly discharge or a wound that becomes red and swollen. Chest pain, sudden breathlessness or collapse requires emergency help.
