Short answer

Postural hypotension is treated by addressing its cause, preventing sudden pressure drops, and reducing the risk of falls.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main aim
Prevent symptoms and falls while treating the trigger.
Safety point
Review medicines with a clinician before changing them.

What postural treatment involves

Postural hypotension means blood pressure falls after moving upright, so the body does not adjust circulation quickly enough. Symptoms may include light-headedness, weakness, blurred vision, nausea, or fainting. A clinician may measure blood pressure and pulse while you are resting and after changing position, then review recent illness, fluid loss, anaemia, nerve conditions, and medicines that can lower pressure.

Treatment is individual. It may involve correcting dehydration or another underlying problem, changing the timing or dose of a medicine under supervision, and using physical measures such as slower transitions, leg movement, or compression garments. Extra salt or fluid is not suitable for everyone, particularly people with heart or kidney problems, so check before making a major change.

Reducing symptoms day to day

Before standing, sit at the edge of the bed and move your feet and calf muscles. Stand with support, pause before walking, and avoid sudden position changes after a hot shower or long period of sitting. If symptoms begin, sit or lie down and raise your legs if comfortable. Keep a symptom and blood-pressure diary, and ask a GP about a tailored plan rather than self-starting medication.

When to seek care

Get urgent help if you faint, injure yourself, develop chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion, or a racing or irregular heartbeat. Seek prompt review for repeated near-fainting, falls, or symptoms that prevent normal activities. Do not drive or use ladders while episodes remain unpredictable.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which medicines could contribute, how to measure pressure at home, whether compression is appropriate, and what action to take when symptoms start.

Questions people ask

Can postural hypotension improve?

It may improve when an underlying cause is corrected or a treatment plan reduces the pressure drop, although follow-up may be needed.

Should I increase salt for postural hypotension?

Only after clinical advice, because added salt can be unsuitable with some heart, kidney, or blood-pressure conditions.
