Hypertrophic scar over time

This type of scar remains within the original wound or incision boundary. It can feel firm, itchy, tender, or tight, especially while the skin is still healing. Colour may also shift as the scar matures. A scar that grows beyond the wound edge may be a keloid instead, so appearance and history matter when confirming the diagnosis.

Protect healed scar tissue from strong sunlight, avoid picking or friction, and use only products recommended for closed skin. A clinician may discuss steroid injection into the scar, fractional laser treatment, or scar revision surgery depending on its thickness, symptoms, location, and maturity. Surgical excision can be considered in selected cases, but removing scar tissue can create another scar and needs careful planning.

Book a dermatology review if the scar becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, ulcerated, drains fluid, or changes quickly. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, fever, or wound separation after an operation. A new lump at a surgical site also deserves an examination rather than self-treatment.
