Hypertrophic scar after a lip piercing

A hypertrophic scar forms when healing produces extra collagen and remains limited to the original piercing site. It can feel firm, itchy or tight and may slowly change colour. A bump can also reflect friction from jewellery, pressure, allergy, trapped debris or infection. Swelling on the outside may be accompanied by tenderness inside the lip. Do not squeeze it, twist jewellery repeatedly or assume every lump is scar tissue.

Have a clinician inspect the skin and the inside of the lip, particularly if the piercing is recent or the jewellery is tight. Follow professional cleaning advice, wash hands before touching the area and reduce pressure or rubbing. Do not remove jewellery during suspected infection unless a clinician directs you, because the opening can close and trap infection.
