What can happen if hyperthyroidism is left untreated?

Excess thyroid hormone can keep the heart rate and body processes elevated. Ongoing symptoms may include palpitations, sweating, heat intolerance, diarrhoea, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, tremor, weakness, and unintended weight change. Over time, untreated disease may contribute to heart rhythm problems, reduced bone strength, muscle problems, and worsening exhaustion. The effects vary by person and by cause; symptoms alone cannot show how severe the thyroid problem is.

Arrange a medical review rather than waiting for symptoms to settle. Bring recent results, medicines, supplements, and a record of heartbeat, weight, bowel changes, sleep, and heat symptoms. Treatment depends on the cause and may involve antithyroid medicine, other medicines, or specialist procedures. Attend follow-up blood tests so treatment can be adjusted safely. Do not use someone else’s thyroid medicine or stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Prompt assessment is needed for severe weakness, dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
