What should you know about hyperthyroidism in pediatrics?

A child may have sweating, heat intolerance, palpitations, tremor, frequent stools, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, poor concentration, or weight change despite eating normally. Younger children may show irritability or restlessness instead of describing symptoms clearly. Hyperthyroidism is a condition presenting with these features; symptoms alone cannot confirm it. A paediatric clinician may review growth, puberty, pulse, neck, eyes, medicines, and thyroid blood tests.

Arrange review if changes persist, school functioning declines, or exercise becomes difficult. Keep a brief record of sleep, bowel habits, heartbeat sensations, appetite, and weight trend without trying to diagnose from it. Give prescribed medicines exactly as directed and attend blood-test follow-up.

Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, collapse, profound weakness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Rapid deterioration with fever, vomiting, or dehydration needs immediate assessment.

Ask which thyroid tests are needed, what may be causing the overactivity, how treatment will be monitored, and which symptoms should trigger urgent care.
