The thyroid helps regulate energy use, temperature, and heart activity. When it is overactive, symptoms may include a racing heartbeat, sweating, heat intolerance, shakiness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, diarrhoea, and unplanned weight loss. Symptoms vary, and some people have only a few of them.

These symptoms are presentations of hyperthyroidism, not proof that a symptom has one cause. Palpitations, night sweats, or feeling anxious can also arise for other reasons. A clinician usually combines your history and examination with thyroid blood tests to clarify the picture.

Bring a list of medicines, supplements, and symptoms, including when they began and whether they affect sleep or daily activity. Do not change thyroid medicine on your own. Treatment depends on the cause and may require follow-up blood tests.

Seek emergency care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat with severe weakness. Tell the healthcare team which language you prefer so safety instructions are understood clearly.
