Hypertension and dizziness: what should you know?

Hypertension commonly has no symptoms. Dizziness may instead reflect dehydration, an inner-ear problem, low blood sugar, anaemia, a heart rhythm issue or a blood-pressure drop after standing. Blood-pressure medicines can also contribute, particularly after a dose change. Describe whether you feel spinning, faint or unsteady, and note what you were doing when it started.

Sit or lie down when dizzy, rise slowly and avoid driving until the sensation has settled. Drink fluids unless a clinician has restricted them. If safe, record blood pressure while seated and again after standing, without repeatedly checking in a panic. Arrange medical review for recurring episodes, falls, palpitations, vomiting or symptoms after starting or changing treatment. Never alter medication without advice.

Call emergency services for sudden one-sided weakness, facial drooping, speech or vision difficulty, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, a new severe headache or inability to walk safely. Dizziness with these features can signal stroke or another emergency and needs immediate assessment.
