What should you know about hyperpigmentation tinea versicolor?

This common superficial yeast imbalance often affects the chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms, especially in warm, humid conditions. Patches may have fine scale and can be lighter or darker than nearby skin. The colour may remain uneven after the yeast is controlled because pigment cells need time to resume their usual activity.

The appearance can overlap with other causes of dark or light patches. A clinician may inspect the scale and distribution, and may gently sample the surface when the diagnosis is uncertain. Cosmetic lightening products do not remove the underlying yeast.

Use the antifungal wash, cream, or medicine recommended for you and follow the directions for the full course. Keep affected skin dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid sharing towels. Recurrence can happen, so a clinician may suggest a maintenance approach for repeated episodes. Delay peels, lasers, or brightening products until active scale and irritation have settled; residual colour can then be reassessed.

Arrange an examination if patches are spreading, very itchy, painful, inflamed, or not improving with the recommended antifungal plan, or if there is no scale and the diagnosis is unclear. Seek prompt care for facial or widespread involvement in someone with a weakened immune system, or for signs of a bacterial infection such as pus, warmth, and increasing tenderness.

Ask whether the patches show active yeast, which formulation fits the affected area, how to prevent recurrence, and when it is reasonable to consider treatment for leftover colour. Ask what other conditions should be considered if the patches have no scale.
