What should you know about hyperpigmentation on armpits?

The underarm is a warm, folded area exposed to rubbing, sweat, shaving, waxing, and deodorant ingredients. Small nicks or an itchy rash can leave post-inflammatory pigment after the skin heals. Darkening that feels thicker or velvety, especially when it also appears on the neck or groin, has a different pattern and deserves assessment. Colour alone cannot identify the cause, and darker skin is not evidence of poor hygiene.

Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid scrubbing, lemon, or unlabelled bleaching mixtures. Pause a deodorant that stings and choose a simple formula once the skin settles. Shave with lubrication and a clean razor, or discuss another hair-removal method if repeated bumps occur. Keep the fold dry without rubbing. A dermatologist may recommend a skin brightening treatment, chemical peel, laser option, or prescription after checking for dermatitis and other causes.

Seek care if the area is painful, cracked, swollen, moist, foul-smelling, blistered, or pus-filled, or if a rash spreads beyond the fold. Arrange an appointment for sudden or progressive darkening, velvety thickening, severe itch, or similar changes elsewhere. Prompt review is appropriate for a new one-sided patch or a spot that bleeds or does not heal.

Ask whether the colour follows irritation, infection, or another skin condition; which deodorant and hair-removal routine is safest; and whether treatment is suitable for the underarm. Mention diabetes risk, new medicines, allergies, and any rash in other folds.
