What should you know about hypermobility flat feet?

Short answer
Hypermobility can let the foot arch flatten more during standing, and symptoms are managed by improving control, comfort, and load tolerance.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common finding
- An arch that lowers during standing and may rise with sitting or toe-standing
- Care focus
- Foot, calf, hip, and balance control
- Support option
- Footwear or orthotics may help selected pressure patterns
How hypermobility affects flat feet
Some flexible feet look flatter when you stand and regain some arch when you sit or rise onto your toes. Extra movement can alter how the ankle, heel, and forefoot share load during walking. This may be symptom-free, or it may contribute to fatigue, arch pain, foot pain, or discomfort higher up the leg.
The foot shape does not by itself show why pain is present. Heel pain with the first steps after rest can occur with plantar fasciitis. Pain around the kneecap may be related to patellofemoral pain syndrome. A clinician can assess footwear, gait, strength, balance, and the flexibility of the foot before recommending support.
Ways to support the feet
Choose shoes that feel stable and allow the toes to move, and increase walking or standing gradually rather than making sudden changes. Exercise Therapy can target the calf, foot muscles, hips, and balance so the arch is controlled during real activities. Physiotherapy can tailor this work and check whether the ankle and knee are sharing load efficiently.
Custom Orthotics may be considered when symptoms persist or when a specific pressure pattern needs help. They should complement, rather than replace, progressive strength and movement practice. Note which surfaces, shoes, and activities increase symptoms.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment for persistent pain, repeated ankle rolling, one-sided change in foot shape, or difficulty walking, running, or standing. Seek prompt care after an injury with marked swelling, deformity, inability to bear weight, or new numbness. Sudden redness, warmth, and swelling also warrants timely medical review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your arch is flexible or rigid, which tissues appear overloaded, whether orthotics would help your activities, and how to progress exercises. Ask how to tell normal training soreness from a sign that the load needs changing.

Questions people ask
Do hypermobile flat feet always need treatment?
No. Treatment is usually guided by pain, fatigue, instability, and limits on activity rather than appearance alone.
Can exercises rebuild a flat arch?
Exercises can improve muscle control and tolerance; they do not need to change the visible foot shape to make walking more comfortable.
