Short answer

Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating, whereas heat intolerance means becoming uncomfortably hot or unwell easily; they can occur together but are not the same diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What these symptoms mean

Sweating cools the body. Hyperhidrosis is sweating that is out of proportion to the surrounding temperature or activity and may affect the palms, feet, underarms, face or other areas. Heat intolerance can involve flushing, fatigue, headache, nausea, dizziness or difficulty staying comfortable in warm conditions. Some people sweat heavily; others may feel overheated without much sweat. Possible contributors include medicines, hormonal changes, thyroid overactivity and body size, so the pattern and timing matter.

Ways to reduce the burden

Keep cool with breathable clothing, shade, air movement and regular fluids. Plan strenuous activity for cooler periods and take breaks before you feel unwell. Note triggers, affected areas, night sweating, new medicines and whether symptoms began suddenly. A GP can check your history, examine you and arrange tests when needed. Treatment depends on the cause and may include changes to a medicine, topical products or specialist options. Read about Heat Intolerance and Hyperthyroidism.

When to seek care urgently

Move to a cool place and seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe headache, trouble breathing, chest discomfort, repeated vomiting or inability to drink after heat exposure. Ask for prompt medical advice if sweating suddenly changes, occurs with fever or weight change, or repeatedly disrupts sleep and daily activities. Heat Exhaustion can worsen quickly, particularly when fluid loss is substantial.

Questions for your doctor

Is my sweating pattern consistent with hyperhidrosis? Could my medicines or thyroid be contributing? Which cooling and treatment options are suitable? What warning signs should make me stop activity and seek help?

Questions people ask

Does hyperhidrosis always cause heat intolerance?

No. Excessive sweating can occur in specific areas without difficulty coping with heat.

Can an overactive thyroid contribute?

Yes. Hyperthyroidism can increase heat sensitivity and sweating, so a clinician may assess for it when the pattern fits.
