What should you know about hyperacute conjunctivitis?

The conjunctiva is the thin surface covering the white of the eye and inner eyelids. Hyperacute inflammation can cause marked redness, swelling, irritation, and thick discharge that returns quickly. Symptoms may start abruptly and can affect one or both eyes. Light sensitivity, reduced vision, significant pain, or a hazy cornea are warning features because problems deeper in the eye can resemble conjunctivitis.

Arrange same-day medical assessment, especially when discharge is heavy or symptoms are worsening quickly. Wash hands before and after touching the eye, avoid contact lenses and eye makeup, and do not share towels or pillowcases. Gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh pad each time. Antibiotic Treatment may be prescribed after examination; do not use leftover drops or someone else’s medicine.

Seek urgent help immediately for vision loss or blurring that does not clear with blinking, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, inability to open the eye, injury, or a chemical splash. Prompt review is also needed for contact-lens wearers with pain or visual change. A GP Consultation can direct treatment, but severe eye findings may need specialist assessment.
