Human gait analysis: what to know

Short answer
Human gait analysis is a structured assessment of how you walk or run, using observation and measurements to identify movement patterns that may affect comfort and function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the assessment can show
A clinician may examine stride timing, step width, foot position, joint motion, balance, and how the pelvis, knees, ankles, and feet share load. The assessment may involve walking barefoot or in usual shoes, and may compare comfortable walking with a task that brings on symptoms. Video, markers, or sensors can add detail to the clinical examination.
A measurement is not a diagnosis by itself. Pain, strength, flexibility, footwear, previous injury, and neurological control can all influence the pattern. The useful result is a reasoned plan that connects findings with your symptoms and daily goals.
How to prepare and use the result
Bring the shoes you use most often and describe when discomfort, fatigue, instability, or uneven wear appears. Wear clothing that allows the legs to move freely. Follow the recommended walking or strengthening programme after the assessment. Depending on the findings, a clinician may discuss exercise changes, footwear adjustments, or [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/). Some centres add [3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/) or a [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) to examine motion and foot pressure.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment for a new limp, repeated falls, sudden inability to bear weight, or walking difficulty after an injury. Seek urgent care for severe pain with a visibly deformed limb, new one-sided weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. A gait assessment can support evaluation, but it should not delay review of these warning signs.
Questions for your doctor
What movement pattern is linked to my symptoms? Which findings are within normal variation? Would video, motion capture, or pressure measurement change the plan? What exercises should I prioritise? How will we judge progress, and when should the assessment be repeated?

Questions people ask
Does gait analysis hurt?
The assessment is generally based on walking or running tasks, but tell the clinician if a task increases pain or instability.
Does an unusual gait prove an injury?
No. Gait varies with shoes, fatigue, pain, strength, and habit, so findings need clinical interpretation.
