What should you know about huge psoriasis flakes?

Psoriasis speeds up the skin’s surface-cell cycle, so cells accumulate into raised, dry, silvery or whitish scale instead of shedding gradually. Plaques may itch, redden, crack or peel, and thick scale can hide the underlying inflammation. Scalp, elbows, knees and other areas can be involved, though distribution varies. Large flakes are a feature that can occur with Psoriasis; they do not show how extensive the condition is by themselves.

Soften scale with a plain emollient and warm, not hot, water; then pat rather than scrub. Avoid picking, scraping or forcibly lifting attached flakes, since this can create breaks that sting and invite infection. Use prescribed creams or scalp treatments exactly as directed, and tell a clinician if the scale is preventing treatment from reaching the skin. Keeping a note of itch, cracking, bleeding and new areas can make a review more useful.

Arrange prompt care if widespread redness, tenderness, warmth, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening peeling develops. Seek urgent help if most of the skin becomes intensely red, painful or sheds, or if you feel faint or unwell. Cracks around joints, hands or feet may need targeted treatment because they can interfere with movement and daily tasks.
