Short answer

Human tetanus immunoglobulin can provide short-term protection after a wound when tetanus risk needs urgent assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What HTIG means

Tetanus is a serious infection caused by a toxin made by bacteria that can enter damaged skin, especially a deep, dirty or puncture wound. Human tetanus immunoglobulin, often abbreviated HTIG, contains ready-made antibodies that bind the toxin before it can cause harm. It acts quickly but its protection is temporary; it does not replace vaccination, which helps the immune system build longer-lasting protection. A clinician considers the wound, your previous tetanus vaccinations and how long ago the injury occurred.

What to do after an injury

Rinse visible dirt from the wound with clean running water, apply gentle pressure for bleeding and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not close a deep or contaminated wound yourself. Seek prompt medical assessment if the injury is a puncture, crush injury, burn, animal bite or contains soil or debris. Bring any vaccination record you have. The clinician may clean the wound, recommend a tetanus vaccine and decide whether HTIG is appropriate.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent medical help for jaw stiffness, trouble swallowing, painful muscle tightening, unusual stiffness in the neck or abdomen, breathing difficulty or spasms after a wound. These symptoms can progress and need immediate assessment. Do not wait for symptoms if the wound is high risk or your vaccination history is uncertain; prevention works best when assessed promptly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Does this wound need HTIG, a tetanus vaccine, or both? How should it be cleaned and dressed? When should I have the next vaccine dose? Which changes around the wound or in my muscles should prompt urgent help?

Questions people ask

Is HTIG the same as a tetanus vaccine?

No. HTIG supplies ready-made antibodies for immediate, temporary protection, while a vaccine trains the immune system for longer-term protection.

Can a small wound cause tetanus?

Any break in the skin can need assessment, particularly when it is contaminated or your vaccination history is incomplete or unknown.
