What should you know about HSE chickenpox?

Chickenpox can begin with feeling unwell and Fever, followed by itchy spots that become fluid-filled Skin Blisters and then crust. New lesions may appear while older ones are healing, so the rash can look mixed. The illness spreads readily through close contact and respiratory droplets, and a person can pass it on before every lesion has crusted.

Shingles is related to the same virus but usually follows reactivation later in life and often forms a painful band on one side. A clinician may need to distinguish these conditions from other blistering rashes, especially when the pattern is atypical.

Stay away from school, work, and close contact with people at higher risk until a clinician confirms it is safe to return. Keep nails short, avoid scratching, use cool baths or soothing skin care, drink fluids, and wear loose clothing. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which medicines are suitable; do not give aspirin to a child with a viral illness.

Contact a GP for advice if the person is pregnant, very young, immunocompromised, or has a significant underlying condition. Antiviral Treatment may be considered for some people when started early. Chickenpox Vaccination is preventive and is discussed separately from treatment of an active rash.

Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe drowsiness, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, dehydration, severe headache, or a rash near the eye. Get prompt advice if blisters become increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or filled with pus, as this can suggest a secondary skin infection. Call ahead before attending a clinic so others can be protected.

Ask whether the rash fits Chickenpox, how long isolation is needed, which itch or fever treatments are safe, whether antiviral medicine is appropriate, and which household contacts need advice. Ask what changes should prompt urgent review.
