How quickly does inhaler therapy relieve wheezing?

Wheezing is a musical or whistling sound made when air moves through narrowed airways. It can occur with asthma, an infection, an allergic reaction or other lung conditions. A reliever targets airway muscle and may quiet the sound relatively quickly, but hearing less wheeze does not always mean the episode has fully settled. A preventer reduces inflammation over time and is not a substitute for rescue instructions.

Use only the inhaler prescribed for you, following dose and timing instructions. Sit upright and follow your action plan. Have your technique checked, including the mouthpiece seal and breath timing; a spacer can help with some devices. Record triggers such as exercise, smoke, dust or cold air, and mention frequent episodes at review.

Get emergency help if wheezing comes with severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, blue or grey lips, faintness, confusion or inability to speak normally. Seek prompt review when wheeze persists after the prescribed reliever, returns repeatedly, or comes with fever, chest pain or coughing blood.
