How long does a liver function test take to work for hepatitis C?

The panel measures markers that can reflect liver-cell irritation or reduced processing and protein-making function. Hepatitis C may be present with few symptoms, and liver results can be normal or abnormal. Diagnosis usually starts with an antibody test and, when indicated, a test for the virus itself. Further assessment may examine liver scarring and help guide treatment.

Ask the clinic when your report will be ready and arrange review of any hepatitis C tests at the same appointment. Bring details of medicines, supplements, previous transfusions or procedures and possible blood exposure. Do not share needles, razors or toothbrushes, and cover open wounds. Avoid alcohol and check all new medicines with a clinician while liver results are being assessed.

Get urgent help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, severe abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting or profound sleepiness. Seek prompt medical advice if jaundice, dark urine, pale stools or right-sided abdominal pain is worsening.
