How long does a liver function test take to work for hepatitis C?

Short answer

A liver function test is reported after laboratory processing, but it cannot diagnose hepatitis C or show the full extent of liver injury alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the result means

The panel measures markers that can reflect liver-cell irritation or reduced processing and protein-making function. Hepatitis C may be present with few symptoms, and liver results can be normal or abnormal. Diagnosis usually starts with an antibody test and, when indicated, a test for the virus itself. Further assessment may examine liver scarring and help guide treatment.

What to do next

Ask the clinic when your report will be ready and arrange review of any hepatitis C tests at the same appointment. Bring details of medicines, supplements, previous transfusions or procedures and possible blood exposure. Do not share needles, razors or toothbrushes, and cover open wounds. Avoid alcohol and check all new medicines with a clinician while liver results are being assessed.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, severe abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting or profound sleepiness. Seek prompt medical advice if jaundice, dark urine, pale stools or right-sided abdominal pain is worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Have I had the hepatitis C antibody and confirmatory virus tests? What do my liver markers suggest? Do I need a scarring assessment or imaging? Which medicines and supplements are suitable, and when should monitoring be repeated?

Questions people ask

Can normal liver results rule out hepatitis C?

No. Hepatitis C can occur without abnormal liver function results.

Does the liver function test measure the hepatitis C virus?

No. A separate antibody test and, when needed, a viral test are used for hepatitis C assessment.
