How is pneumonia treated?

Pneumonia is an infection or inflammation affecting the air sacs in the lungs. A clinician considers symptoms, examination findings, medical conditions, and how well you are breathing. A Chest X-Ray may help assess the lungs. Pneumonia can follow infections such as Influenza or COVID-19, so antibiotics do not help every case.

Mild illness may be managed at home with rest, fluids, and medicine recommended for fever or discomfort. Antibiotic Treatment is used when bacterial pneumonia is suspected or confirmed; take it exactly as prescribed and do not share leftover doses. More serious illness may require oxygen, intravenous fluids, monitored treatment, or hospital admission. Avoid smoking while recovering and pace activity as strength returns.

Seek urgent medical care for worsening Shortness of Breath, blue or grey lips, confusion, severe weakness, chest pain, or difficulty staying awake. A persistent high fever, inability to keep fluids down, or deterioration after initial improvement also needs prompt assessment, because severe infection can progress to Sepsis.
