How Is Perioral Dermatitis Treated?

Perioral dermatitis causes small red bumps, dryness, burning, or tightness around the mouth and sometimes the nose or eyes. The skin between the lip and rash may remain relatively clear. It can resemble pimples, acne, or irritation, so a clinician may review skincare, toothpaste, cosmetics, and recent steroid use before confirming the diagnosis.

Simplify your routine and pause fragranced products, heavy creams, scrubs, and new active ingredients unless a clinician advises otherwise. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and use a bland moisturiser if the skin feels dry. Do not start or restart a topical corticosteroid on the rash without medical guidance; stopping one may need an individual plan. A clinician may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy for milder disease or oral antibiotics for acne when the rash is more persistent or widespread.

Arrange a review when the rash persists, spreads toward the eyes, becomes painful, or interferes with eating or daily care. Seek prompt medical advice for eye pain, marked eyelid swelling, vision changes, pus, or rapidly spreading redness.
