Hysterosalpingography, also called a tubal dye test, uses an X-ray and contrast liquid placed through the cervix. The clinician watches the shape of the uterus and whether the liquid moves through each fallopian tube into the pelvic cavity. This can identify an apparent blockage or suggest that the tubes are open. Spasm, positioning, technical factors, or temporary material can sometimes affect the picture, so an unexpected result may need confirmation. The test does not assess egg release, sperm factors, egg quality, or every pelvic condition that can affect fertility.

Your fertility team will advise when in the menstrual cycle to arrange the test and how to check for pregnancy or infection beforehand. Tell them about allergies to contrast material, pelvic infection, bleeding, medicines, and previous reactions. You may feel cramping during or shortly after the procedure.
