How effective is GP consultation for sinusitis?

The GP will ask about blocked or runny nose, facial pressure, reduced smell, headache, fever and how symptoms have changed. They may examine your nose, throat and face. This helps distinguish sinusitis from a viral cold, allergy, migraine or a dental problem. Treatment depends on the pattern and severity; antibiotics are not suitable for every episode. A review can also identify symptoms that suggest a complication or need for another service.

Record when symptoms started, whether they improved and then became worse, and any fever or swelling. Tell the GP about allergies, dental pain, pregnancy, immune problems and medicines you have tried. Follow the recommended nasal or pain-relief measures as directed, and avoid sharing prescribed medicines. If symptoms persist or recur, ask what change should prompt reassessment rather than repeating treatment on your own.

Book a GP review when facial pressure, discharge or blocked breathing continues, keeps returning or interferes with sleep and daily activities. Seek urgent care for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, stiff neck, marked facial swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Ask which cause seems most likely, whether an antibiotic or another treatment is appropriate, how to use any nasal medicine, and what symptoms mean you should return urgently.
