During colonoscopy, a flexible camera shows the lining of the rectum and colon. A clinician can usually remove a small polyp during the same examination, while a larger or awkwardly positioned growth may need a different technique or planned procedure. Removed tissue is examined to identify its type and whether any concerning cell changes are present.

A clear examination reduces the chance that a visible growth is left untreated, but no test sees areas hidden by stool or an incomplete examination. Preparation quality, the time spent inspecting the lining, the number and shape of polyps, and the pathology result all affect the next decision.

Follow the bowel-preparation instructions closely, including the timing of the cleansing solution and any medication changes agreed with your care team. Tell the endoscopy unit about blood thinners, diabetes medicines, allergies, pregnancy, and previous difficulty with sedation. Afterward, keep the pathology and procedure reports together; they explain whether removal was complete and when another examination is advised.
