How does oral minoxidil work?

Taken by mouth, minoxidil reaches the circulation rather than only the scalp surface. Its effects may improve the environment around follicles, prolong the growth stage, and make some hairs appear fuller over time. It does not remove the underlying tendency toward pattern hair loss, and it is not suitable for every cause of shedding. A clinician may consider it for male pattern hair loss or female pattern hair loss after reviewing your medical history, blood pressure, medicines, and the pattern of loss.

Use the prescribed dose and do not change it without medical advice. Because this medicine can affect blood pressure and fluid balance, your clinician may monitor symptoms, pulse, and blood pressure. Possible effects include light-headedness, ankle swelling, a faster heartbeat, or extra hair growth on the face or body. Tell the prescriber about heart, kidney, or blood-pressure conditions and all medicines you take. Topical minoxidil is a different option and is applied directly to the scalp.

Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, or a new rapid or irregular heartbeat. Contact your prescriber promptly if swelling persists, dizziness interferes with daily activities, or shedding changes suddenly. Sudden patchy loss, scalp inflammation, or loss of eyebrows and body hair needs assessment because it may point to a different condition.
