How does NIPT work?

A blood sample is taken from the arm and processed using DNA analysis, including methods associated with Next-Generation Sequencing. The test usually screens for conditions such as Down Syndrome and may assess sex-chromosome differences, depending on the laboratory panel. It is a screening test, so a higher-chance result does not confirm a condition and a lower-chance result cannot exclude every condition.

Your clinician interprets the result alongside gestational age, ultrasound findings and your medical history. Diagnostic testing such as Amniocentesis may be offered when a result needs confirmation.

Discuss what the panel includes, when the sample can be taken, and how results will be communicated. Ask whether an ultrasound is needed first and what follow-up would be offered for an inconclusive, higher-chance or unexpected result. Keep the report so it can be reviewed with your maternity team.

NIPT itself is a blood test and does not require urgent care afterward. Contact your maternity team promptly if you have bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting or other pregnancy warning symptoms; these are not explained by the screening result and need separate assessment.
