How does iron supplementation work?
Short answer
Iron supplementation supplies absorbable iron that the body uses to make haemoglobin, gradually restoring iron stores when deficiency is present.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Follow-up blood tests may guide treatment
What the supplement is replacing
Haemoglobin inside red blood cells carries oxygen around the body. When iron is low, the body may not make enough healthy haemoglobin, which can contribute to tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness or cold hands and feet. Restless legs can also be associated with low iron, but symptoms have several possible causes.
Oral iron salts pass through the digestive system and are absorbed into the bloodstream. Some iron is used to make new red blood cells, while some replenishes stored iron. Improvement in symptoms and blood results may not happen at the same pace, so treatment length is guided by follow-up rather than symptoms alone.
What to do
Take iron exactly as prescribed and ask how to space it from medicines or foods that can reduce absorption. Nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation and darker stools can occur; tell the prescriber if these make treatment difficult, because another preparation or plan may be suitable. Keep iron away from children, as accidental ingestion can be dangerous.
A blood test can help confirm anaemia, assess iron status and monitor response. The reason for low iron also needs attention, such as dietary insufficiency, blood loss or reduced absorption. Do not self-treat persistent symptoms without checking whether iron deficiency is actually present.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black tar-like stools unrelated to the expected effect of iron, fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain or marked weakness. Contact a clinician if abdominal pain is severe, constipation persists, an allergic reaction develops, or symptoms do not improve as expected. If you suspect a child has swallowed iron, seek emergency advice immediately.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which blood tests confirm deficiency, how to take the preparation, when to repeat testing, what side effects to report, and whether blood loss, diet or absorption problems need investigation.

Questions people ask
Does iron supplementation help every kind of anaemia?
No. Iron is useful when iron deficiency contributes to anaemia; other causes need different assessment and treatment.
Why can stools look darker with iron?
Oral iron can darken stools, but tar-like stools, bleeding symptoms or feeling unwell need prompt medical advice.
