How does ear wax removal work?
Updated

Short answer
Ear wax removal works by softening or gently extracting wax from the ear canal after a clinician checks that removal is appropriate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- The ear canal and eardrum are checked.
- Possible methods
- Microsuction, curette removal or suitable irrigation.
- Avoid
- Cotton buds, sharp objects and ear candles.
What happens during removal
A clinician looks into the ear to assess the wax, canal and eardrum. If the wax is hard or tightly packed, softening drops may be advised before the appointment. Removal may use microsuction, a small curette, or controlled irrigation when suitable. The method depends on the amount and position of wax, the ear's condition and your medical history.
Microsuction uses an Ear Microsuction Device to draw wax out while the clinician views the canal. The procedure can improve blocked hearing when wax is the cause, but it may feel noisy or briefly uncomfortable. It should not be attempted with household objects, cotton buds or candles, which can push wax deeper or injure the ear.
Before and after the appointment
Tell the clinician about previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, infection, dizziness or severe sensitivity. Use drops only as directed. Keep water and objects out of the ear after removal if advised, and report continuing symptoms rather than repeatedly cleaning the canal. Hearing may not improve if another condition is present.
Earwax Buildup can recur, especially when the canal is narrow or objects are used to clean it. A clinician can explain whether any preventative care is appropriate for you.
When to seek medical help
Seek prompt assessment for severe Earache, sudden Hearing Loss, discharge, bleeding, fever, marked dizziness or swelling around the ear. Get urgent help for sudden hearing change with neurological symptoms. Do not use drops or arrange irrigation without advice if you may have a perforated eardrum or have had ear surgery.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which removal method is suitable, whether you need softening drops, and what symptoms should settle afterwards. If you have Ringing in the Ears or persistent hearing difficulty, ask whether the ear is clear and whether another assessment is needed.
