How does cervical fusion work?

Short answer

Cervical fusion removes pressure from nerves or the spinal cord, places a spacer between neck bones, and stabilises the segment while it joins.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens in the neck

Through an approach selected for your anatomy and problem, the surgeon removes a damaged disc, bone spurs, or other tissue pressing on a nerve or the spinal cord. A spacer, such as a PEEK spinal cage, fills the disc space and helps restore separation between the vertebrae. A plate and screws may hold the bones and cage steady. Over time, bone grows across the prepared segment, creating one stable unit rather than a freely moving disc level.

Cervical myelopathy can involve pressure on the spinal cord, while cervical radiculopathy involves irritation or compression of a nerve root. Cervical spondylosis describes wear-related changes that can contribute to either problem. Fusion is selected only when the expected benefit and the effects of losing motion at that level have been considered.

Supporting the healing phase

Use your collar, medicines, and activity limits exactly as instructed. Keep the incision clean and avoid lifting, sudden neck movement, or driving until your surgeon clears them. Walking is often introduced early, while heavier activity waits for examination and imaging. Report swallowing difficulty that is getting worse, voice changes that concern you, or pain that is not controlled so the team can advise you.

Get help quickly for these signs

Seek urgent care for new or worsening weakness, loss of hand coordination, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. After surgery, chest pain, breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing neck swelling, inability to swallow liquids, or a wound with spreading redness or drainage also needs urgent assessment.

Questions to take to the appointment

Ask which level will be treated, what is compressing the nerve or cord, whether a cage and plate are planned, and how the team will check that fusion is progressing. Clarify collar use, work restrictions, driving, and which neurological changes should trigger an immediate call.

Questions people ask

Will my neck still move after fusion?

The fused level no longer moves normally, but other neck segments continue to provide movement. The change depends on how many levels are treated.

What is the spacer for?

It maintains space between the vertebrae and provides a place for bone to grow as the segment heals.
