How does benzoyl peroxide treatment work?

The medicine is applied to skin as a wash, gel, cream, or lotion. It releases oxygen within the pore, creating an environment where acne-associated bacteria are less able to thrive. It also helps shed excess cells from the pore opening, so oil and dead skin are less likely to form new blockages. This can reduce pimples and redness, including on the chest or back. Benzoyl peroxide may be used alone or alongside another acne medicine when a clinician recommends it.

Start with the product and schedule advised for your skin. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin and wash your hands afterwards. Irritation, dryness, peeling, or stinging can occur, especially at first; a moisturiser and gentle cleanser may help. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels, clothing, and hair, so allow it to dry fully and use white fabrics where practical. Do not apply it to broken skin or near the eyes, lips, or inside the nose.

Stop using the product and seek urgent medical help if you develop facial swelling, widespread hives, breathing difficulty, or blistering. Arrange a review if severe burning, swelling, or persistent rash develops, or if acne is painful, scarring, or not improving with consistent use. A clinician can distinguish acne from conditions that need a different treatment.
