Hot cupping therapy: what to know

Short answer

Hot cupping therapy uses warmed cups and suction to create temporary skin and muscle sensations, but it is not suitable for everyone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main action
Warmed cups create suction on the skin
Common local effect
Temporary circular marks and tenderness
Key safety issue
Burn, skin injury and infection risk

What happens during cupping

A practitioner places cups on the skin after warming them or uses another method to create suction. The skin is drawn upward, which can leave circular marks, tenderness or bruising that fade over time. Hot cupping adds burn risk, while wet cupping adds bleeding and infection concerns. The treatment should not be described as removing toxins or correcting the underlying cause of pain.

Some people seek it for Back Muscle Spasm or Upper Back Pain. Any comfort may be short lived, and persistent symptoms still need a clinical examination to identify muscle, joint, nerve or spinal causes.

If you are considering it

Choose a qualified practitioner who explains the method, checks your medical history and uses clean equipment. Ask how cup temperature is controlled, how skin is protected and what aftercare is provided. Do not place a hot cup over broken, infected or numb skin, varicose veins, or an area with poor circulation. Tell the practitioner about medicines or conditions that affect bleeding, healing or sensation.

Cupping should complement a clear care plan rather than delay assessment or rehabilitation. Gentle movement, activity adjustment and clinician-led physiotherapy may address the source more directly.

When to seek medical care

Get medical advice for blistering, a burn, spreading redness, pus, fever, heavy bleeding or pain that is becoming stronger after treatment. Seek prompt assessment for new weakness, loss of feeling, chest symptoms, severe back pain after an injury, or difficulty controlling your bladder or bowel. These signs need medical attention rather than another cupping session.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your diagnosis makes cupping reasonable, whether your medicines or skin condition increase risk, and what improvement should be expected. Ask which evidence-based exercises or other treatments could address the trigger for your back or upper-back symptoms.

Questions people ask

Does hot cupping remove the cause of pain?

No. It may alter short-term comfort, but it does not diagnose or correct the muscle, joint, nerve or spinal source of pain.

Can cupping leave marks?

Yes. Suction can cause circular discolouration and tenderness; burns, blistering or worsening redness are not expected and need assessment.
