What should you know about home normal delivery?

Whether this option is suitable depends on your health, the pregnancy, the baby's position and wellbeing, and how quickly emergency maternity services can be reached.

A planned home birth usually includes antenatal discussions, an assessment of pregnancy risk, a trained midwife or other authorised birth professional, and equipment for monitoring you and the baby. The plan should name the nearest maternity unit, the transport arrangement, and who will accompany you if transfer becomes necessary.

Labour may progress without medication, or you may need pain-relief options that are available at home. If labour slows, bleeding occurs, the baby's heart rate becomes concerning, or you or the baby need treatment that cannot be provided at home, moving to hospital may be recommended. A hospital birth, including a caesarean section, can then become the safer plan.

Discuss the setting early with your obstetrician or midwife, including previous births, medical conditions, medicines, allergies, and any concerns about the pregnancy. Confirm who will attend, how monitoring will work, and which pain-relief methods are available.

Keep your maternity records accessible and prepare clean towels, baby clothing, feeding supplies, and a phone with reliable transport contacts. Ask how labour will be supported if it does not begin as expected; induction of labour is a hospital-based option in some circumstances.

Contact your maternity team urgently for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, reduced or absent fetal movement, waters that are green or heavily blood-stained, or symptoms that make you feel seriously unwell. During labour, seek immediate help if the birth professional is concerned about your observations or the baby's heart rate.

Call emergency services when there is severe bleeding, collapse, difficulty breathing, a seizure, or a baby who needs immediate help after birth. Do not delay transfer while trying to continue a home birth; the attending professional can coordinate the safest next step.

Ask: Is my pregnancy considered suitable for planned home birth? Who will attend throughout labour? What monitoring and pain relief are available? Which signs require transfer, how long might transfer take, and which maternity unit would receive me? How will feeding support be arranged after birth?
