What should you know about a Holter electrocardiogram?

A standard ECG records a short snapshot of the heart's electrical activity. A Holter setup uses sticky chest electrodes linked to a small recorder, allowing the tracing to continue while you walk, work, rest, and sleep. It can help clinicians investigate palpitations, unexplained dizziness, or symptoms that were absent during a clinic ECG.

The result is interpreted with your symptoms, medical history, and medicines. It may show a normal rhythm, an intermittent rhythm disturbance, or a pattern that needs further assessment. It is not a substitute for immediate assessment during severe symptoms.

Keep a clear diary: note the time of symptoms, what you were doing, and whether you felt a racing heartbeat, fluttering, chest discomfort, dizziness, or breathlessness. Keep the recorder dry according to the fitting instructions and avoid tugging the wires. Ask your clinic how to manage exercise, bathing, loose electrodes, and skin irritation.

Take medicines as prescribed unless your clinician gives different instructions. Bring the diary and recorder back at the arranged time so the tracing can be analysed.

Call emergency services for severe or persistent chest pain, serious difficulty breathing, fainting, or sudden symptoms such as facial drooping or trouble speaking. Do not wait for the Holter result. For repeated palpitations with light-headedness, contact your clinician promptly, especially if the episodes are becoming longer or more intense.
