What should you know about a Hodgkin lymphoma PET scan?

A PET-CT scan uses an FDG radiotracer and computed tomography in one appointment. Cells using more glucose may take up more FDG, while the CT part shows body structures. Inflammation and infection can also appear active, so a scan cannot by itself prove that every bright area is lymphoma.

The scan may help map lymph nodes or other areas, establish the extent of disease, and compare findings after treatment. Your clinician reads the pattern alongside biopsy results, symptoms, examination, and blood tests. The report may use terms such as uptake or response, which are best discussed with the treating team.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about fasting, permitted drinks, medicines, and arrival time. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, recent infection, and difficulty lying flat. Wear comfortable clothing and expect a quiet waiting period after the tracer is given while it distributes through the body.

During imaging, remain still and follow breathing instructions when asked. Afterward, follow the centre's advice about fluids and contact with others. Ask when your report will be reviewed and how the scan fits into the wider treatment plan.

Tell staff immediately about pain, dizziness, rash, or breathing difficulty after the tracer. Contact your care team for fever, worsening swelling, persistent vomiting, or inability to drink after the appointment. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing trouble, collapse, or swelling of the face or throat.

Ask what the scan is assessing, whether fasting or diabetes instructions change, how inflammation may affect interpretation, when results will be available, and what the next decision depends on.
