Hoarse voice and strep throat: what to know

Strep throat commonly causes a painful sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, and painful swallowing. Hoarseness points more toward irritation of the voice box, especially when there is a cough, runny nose, or blocked nose. A Common Cold can inflame the throat and vocal cords. Acid Reflux can also irritate the voice box, sometimes without obvious heartburn.

A diagnosis cannot be made from voice changes alone. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether a throat swab or other assessment is appropriate.

Rest your voice, speak softly rather than whispering, drink fluids, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Do not share cups or utensils while you have a sore throat. Follow prescribed treatment exactly if strep throat is confirmed; antibiotics do not treat viral causes.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or severe weakness. Arrange a medical review if the sore throat is severe, fever persists, symptoms keep worsening, or hoarseness does not settle. Persistent hoarseness may need assessment of the throat and vocal cords; it is not, by itself, proof of cancer.
