Hives for a Week: What to Know

Hives can appear in waves: one welt fades while another develops. A week of episodes can reflect a continuing exposure, a recent infection, a medicine, a sting, heat, pressure, or an immune response with no obvious trigger. It does not prove that a specific food or product is responsible. Note whether each mark moves and fades, or whether one spot remains fixed. Persistent painful marks, bruising, blistering, fever, or joint symptoms need assessment for conditions other than ordinary hives. Deeper swelling of the lips or eyelids may be angioedema.

Arrange a non-emergency appointment and bring a dated photo record. List every medicine and supplement, recent illness, foods that seemed unusual, stings, heat, exercise, pressure, and skin products. Cool compresses and loose clothing may ease itching. A clinician or pharmacist can guide oral antihistamine use and check for interactions or conditions that affect your choices. Avoid repeated trial-and-error restriction of foods without advice, because it can make daily life harder without identifying the trigger.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, or rapidly increasing tongue or mouth swelling. Seek prompt care when hives follow a new medicine or sting, facial swelling is pronounced, or the rash is rapidly spreading. A week of hives without those warning signs is usually a reason for planned clinical review, not a reason to assume the cause from appearance alone.
