Hives All Over the Body: What to Know

Widespread urticaria can appear suddenly, change shape, and move from one area to another. Possible triggers include an infection, medicine, food, heat, pressure, exercise, or contact with a substance, and sometimes no single trigger is found. Itching is common, but burning can occur. Swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat may be angioedema and changes the urgency.

Move to a cool environment, wear loose clothing, and use cool compresses rather than heat. Stop any newly introduced non-essential skin product or supplement and make a list of recent foods, medicines, infections, and activities. Photograph the rash because individual welts may fade before assessment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about an oral antihistamine and check for interactions. Avoid scratching and do not take a suspected medicine again without guidance.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt assessment for facial swelling, repeated vomiting, dizziness, or hives spreading quickly. Arrange a review if the rash does not settle, keeps returning, or becomes painful, bruised, blistered, or associated with fever or mouth sores.
