Hip Pinning Procedure: What to Know

During hip pinning, the surgeon repositions the broken bone and inserts fixation to keep the pieces stable. The equipment may include screws or a plate, or an intramedullary nail that sits within the thigh bone. The approach is selected from the fracture's position, its stability, the health of the bone, and your overall medical condition.

Imaging is used to guide alignment and confirm the hardware position. Hip pinning is not the same as replacing the hip joint. For some fractures, hip fracture surgery may instead involve replacing part of the joint; your surgeon should explain why one option fits your situation.

Expect a staged plan for getting out of bed, using a frame or crutches, and exercising the hip and leg. Do not increase weight bearing or abandon an aid until the surgical team permits it. Keep the incision clean and follow instructions for dressings, bathing, and medicines.

Post-operative rehabilitation supports transfers, walking, strength, and daily tasks. Later, a falls prevention programme can help reduce hazards and improve balance. Arrange practical support at home before discharge if stairs, bathing, or meals may be difficult.

Seek prompt medical advice for a wound that becomes increasingly red or wet, fever, pain that suddenly escalates, a new change in leg position, or inability to follow the expected walking plan. Emergency symptoms include severe breathlessness, chest pain, or collapse.

Ask what type of fracture you have, which hardware will be used, when imaging will be repeated, what weight-bearing level applies, and how rehabilitation will be adjusted if pain or swelling changes.
