What should you know about hijama needle?

Short answer

Needle-based hijama opens the skin after suction, so sterile equipment, bleeding precautions, and careful aftercare are essential.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the needle changes

Hijama may refer to dry cupping or wet cupping. In wet cupping, cups create suction and the practitioner then makes small openings in the skin before applying suction again. This is different from acupuncture, which uses fine needles placed at selected points and does not involve the same skin-opening process.

Because the skin is opened, wet hijama can cause bleeding, soreness, bruising, scarring, or infection. The treatment should not be performed over a wound, active rash, infected skin, varicose veins, or an area with reduced feeling. It should not be presented as a substitute for diagnosing a nerve, muscle, or joint problem.

Checks before treatment

Before agreeing, ask whether the procedure is wet or dry, what single-use items will be used, how hands and surfaces are cleaned, and how used blades or needles are discarded. Tell the practitioner about blood-thinning medicines, a bleeding tendency, diabetes, pregnancy, skin conditions, allergies, immune problems, and recent operations.

Arrange clean dressings and follow the aftercare instructions. Keep the area dry or covered as advised, avoid picking at scabs, and do not share towels or personal items that touch the treated skin. If your concern includes back tightness or pain, review [Back Muscle Spasm](/symptoms/back-muscle-spasm/) and [Upper Back Pain](/symptoms/upper-back-pain/) as symptom guides, not as a diagnosis.

Warning signs after wet hijama

Contact a clinician for persistent bleeding, increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or pain that continues to intensify. Urgent care is needed for fainting, marked weakness, breathing difficulty, or new neurological symptoms. A suspected infection should be assessed promptly and should not be treated by repeating cupping.

Questions to ask

Ask whether wet hijama is suitable for your health history, whether a non-invasive option is safer, how bleeding will be controlled, and what signs should trigger a call. If you take regular medicines, ask whether the clinician who prescribes them should advise you first.

Questions people ask

Is a hijama needle the same as an acupuncture needle?

No. Wet hijama involves skin openings after cupping; acupuncture uses fine needles placed in selected points without the same procedure.

What should I do if the site becomes red and hot?

Seek medical advice, particularly if redness spreads or comes with swelling, drainage, fever, or worsening pain.
