What should you know about high pitched barking cough?

A barking sound often comes from the throat or voice box rather than deep in the lungs. Viral infections such as a common cold or bronchiolitis can irritate the airway. Allergic rhinitis, asthma, acid reflux, acute bronchitis, chronic cough, and bronchiectasis can also produce cough sounds, although the pattern differs between people.

Notice whether the cough is worse at night, follows feeding or lying down, comes with wheeze or a hoarse voice, or produces mucus. Fever, runny nose, noisy breathing, and the age of the person affected help a clinician assess the likely cause.

Keep the person upright and calm, offer small sips of fluid if swallowing is comfortable, and avoid smoke, sprays, and strong fragrances. Do not use steam from boiling water because burns can occur. For a child, supervise closely and record any noisy breathing or change in colour.

Arrange medical advice if the cough is worsening, lasts beyond the expected illness, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by fever, wheeze, vomiting, or poor fluid intake. Use prescribed inhalers exactly as directed; avoid giving cough medicines to a child unless a clinician or pharmacist advises it.

Call emergency services for struggling or rapid breathing, ribs pulling in, pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, drooling with difficulty swallowing, inability to speak or cry normally, severe drowsiness, or sudden onset after choking. Noisy breathing while resting also needs urgent assessment.
