What should you know about high oestradiol?

Oestradiol naturally changes during the menstrual cycle and rises in pregnancy. Levels can also be influenced by fertility medicines, hormone replacement, ovarian activity, or an ovarian cyst. A single result may be difficult to interpret if the timing of the test is unknown.

Your clinician may ask about bleeding pattern, pelvic discomfort, breast tenderness, headaches, fertility treatment and medicines. The result may be repeated or assessed with other tests, depending on your situation. High oestradiol does not identify one cause by itself.

Keep a record of the test date, cycle day, pregnancy possibility, symptoms and every hormone medicine or supplement you use. Take the report to the clinician who ordered it and ask what range applies to your circumstances. Do not stop prescribed hormones or fertility treatment without advice.

If symptoms relate to menopause treatment, ask whether the route and dose remain suitable. Vaginal oestrogen therapy is a separate treatment that may be considered for local symptoms, but it should be discussed with a clinician.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, chest pain, or new breathlessness. Contact your clinician soon for persistent abnormal bleeding, increasing abdominal swelling, or symptoms that began after a medicine change.
