What should you know about HFMD spots?

Hand, foot and mouth disease can cause spots on the palms, soles and sometimes the buttocks, legs or arms. Small painful sores may also develop inside the mouth, making eating or drinking uncomfortable. A fever, sore throat, tiredness or reduced appetite can occur around the same time. The spots may not look like ordinary pimples because they can be flat, blister-like or tender rather than filled with oil.

Acne, folliculitis, rosacea and perioral dermatitis can also cause facial bumps, but their patterns and associated symptoms differ. A symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself; a clinician considers the distribution, timing and any mouth symptoms.

Encourage fluids and choose cool, soft foods if mouth sores hurt. Keep the skin clean, avoid picking or bursting blisters, and wash hands frequently. Do not share cups, towels or utensils while illness is active. Limit close contact with babies, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system until a clinician advises that normal activities are reasonable. Avoid applying acne products to blistering or irritated skin unless prescribed.

Seek prompt medical advice if drinking becomes difficult, urination drops, the person is unusually sleepy, breathing is affected, or the rash involves the eyes. Arrange an assessment when fever persists, symptoms are worsening, the diagnosis is uncertain, or the spots become increasingly red, swollen or draining. Children who seem seriously unwell need urgent evaluation.
