What should you know about HFMD and cough?

Hand, foot and mouth illness mainly causes mouth ulcers and spots or blisters on the hands, feet, fingers, toes, or nappy area. A cough may happen at the same time because viruses circulate together, or because throat irritation, nasal mucus, asthma, reflux, or another airway condition is present. A cough does not establish the cause of a rash, and a rash does not explain a cough without considering breathing symptoms and the overall pattern.

Offer fluids and let the person rest. Saline nasal drops may help loosen mucus in a young child; avoid over-the-counter cough products unless a pharmacist confirms they are suitable. Keep smoke, incense, and strong fragrances away from the airway. Record whether the cough is dry or phlegmy, worse at night or with activity, and whether wheeze, fever, or fast breathing appears. Continue hand hygiene and avoid sharing household items.

Get urgent help for struggling to breathe, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe wheeze, marked chest pulling-in, confusion, or difficulty waking. Arrange a prompt review if the cough is worsening, lasts beyond the expected illness, causes repeated vomiting, or comes with poor drinking and reduced urination. A clinician can listen to the chest and examine the mouth and skin when the combination is unclear.

Ask whether the cough fits a common viral illness, whether the chest needs examination, which medicines are safe for the person’s age, and what breathing changes should trigger urgent care.
