What should you know about HER2-negative breast cancer?

HER2-negative means the tested tissue did not meet the laboratory criteria for increased HER2 expression or amplification. It does not mean that the cancer is harmless, that treatment is unnecessary, or that every HER2-directed option is excluded. Hormone-receptor status, tumour grade, size, lymph nodes, stage, gene-expression results, and genomic findings can all add information.

Review the pathology report with your breast cancer team and ask whether the result was clear or required confirmation. Imaging and biopsy findings help define the local disease, while staging checks whether other areas are involved. Depending on these details, treatment may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone treatment, or another medicine. Ask how treatment choices relate to your hormone receptors and any gene-expression or genomic test.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, or confusion. During treatment, promptly report fever, uncontrolled vomiting, signs of infection around a wound, new severe pain, or a new neurological symptom.
