Hepatitis and meningitis

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and may cause nausea, tiredness, abdominal discomfort, or yellowing of the skin. Meningitis is inflammation of the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord. Fever, severe headache, light sensitivity, vomiting, a stiff neck, confusion, or unusual sleepiness can occur with meningitis. A person may have more than one illness, but hepatitis does not mean that meningitis is present. Only an examination and appropriate tests can clarify the cause.

If meningitis is a concern, seek emergency medical assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment. Tell clinicians when symptoms began, whether there has been contact with someone who was ill, and which medicines or vaccines you have received. A GP Consultation can help with non-urgent symptoms, but it is not a substitute for emergency care when severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, or altered awareness is present. Do not share drinks or utensils while an infection is being assessed, and follow public-health advice about close contacts.

Call emergency services immediately for a rapidly worsening headache, fever with a stiff neck, confusion, a seizure, difficulty waking, breathing problems, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Repeated vomiting and marked light sensitivity alongside severe headache also need urgent evaluation. Do not wait for every symptom to appear. Preventive options, including meningococcal vaccination, depend on age, health, travel, and exposure risk.

Ask whether your symptoms fit meningitis or another illness, which tests are needed urgently, whether close contacts require advice, and whether your vaccination history changes your protection.
